Pluspunten

Pay was good considering I joined them fresh out of college. Benefits were great, 401k matching was generous (union), healthcare was low cost with generous company HSA contribution every year. Vacation wise, they could be better but considering you can accumulate vacation and sick leave (union), it was not bad. Back when the company was doing good, bonuses were also a plus (EIP) although not as competitive as other tech companies in the Puget Sound area. Had a pretty good experience with my immediate supervisors and colleagues.

Minpunten

Merit increases/pay raises were negotiated by the union. Before 2017, management had a 5% raise pool with a minimum of 1.5-2% guaranteed raise every year. Assuming you were a high performer, you could expect anywhere from 4-7% raises every year. After the 2016 contract negotiation everything changed, the raise pool averaged 2-3% with 0% guaranteed raises. They incorporated a lump sum amount which averaged 2-3%. So under this scheme my 4-7% raise turned into a 2-3% raise and 2-3% lump sum (cash bonus). Not bad but not great considering Puget Sound is a high cost of living area with tech companies offering generous compensation packages

Pluspunten

Easy going, nice benefits, free further education (masters/PhD). Great for an engineer starting out who needs to dip their feet in the pool of engineering for a few years and to get a great 401(k) match at the start of your career (compounding growth). Great for late stage career due to the benefits and solid enough pay in a low cost of living area

Minpunten

pay-scale lagging, no emphasis on learning new things, no punishment for people who are bad at their job. After working for 4 years, I feel like I should have jumped ship after 2. I haven't been given meaningful work that really challenges me in a while. Now I feel pigeonholed into staying because I have enough years of experience that I really should be considered senior, but I haven't been given work that reflects what I senior engineer should be capable of. Now I'm trying to jump ship before it's really too late. If I stay here another 2 years I think I will be genuinely unemployable and will have to stay at this company forever.
