Remote / hybrid (but remote because... come on), pto was pretty okay. Kind co-workers in my group. Leaving the toxic workplace, biggest relief I have had.

Management = toxic. I worked for a manager who destroyed my confidence by consistently undermining my competence. I have spent thousands in therapy to try to get back to the days before maplesoft. It is not okay to treat your employees like this. Just because some managers are horrific workaholics and use their work as the single value in their lives does not give you the space to treat your employees so badly. I NEVER was supported by my management. My manager CREATED a toxic environment. How can a flower grow if it is never given water or sun? It was the way it was because of them and it didn't have to be that way. Nothing short of perfection was expected daily. No human can give you perfection. I felt that I could never ask a question for being ridiculed for not knowing the answer to the question I asked. I could never ask for help for the same reason. I was left in a toxic hell hole on my own. And again, my manager created this environment based on their response and actions. This job really destroyed my mental health and plunged me into depression. On top of it all, we didn't have pay raises for two years and I did NOT get paid a fair wage. No one at the company deserved no pay increases for two years. Honestly, it's kind of suspicious if you ask me... and the CEO has the audacity to say "To be clear this means I am not getting a pay increase either". Really bro? You have to make that clear? He was really bad at reading the room. "We'll make this the best year yet at maplesoft" is not something you say to lift spirits immediately after saying we aren't getting pay increases, again. Then *cue company financial issues*. It's somehow rated as one of the top happiest employers in Canada or something like that, I don't believe it. Don't trust it. I learned that even if you get along very well in an interview with hiring manager that is zero indication of how you will be managed. I was bamboozled. Honestly, it was a thought we needed a separate manager and the actual manager should have just been the highest level technical engineer. He didn't have time and patience to manage. Not all technical people have the skills, communication, desire, and mindset to be a manger and that's okay. But then, I guess they can't afford to have someone who is just a manager and then someone who is a very high level engineer. They can afford much these days.

Could be a first job out of school for a year of experience

I don't know where to start. Many have commented about the lack of management and direction. That will only get worse now that the old CEO has left. With the new people in charge, they barely listen to anyone but just follow orders from Japan. This company has lost it's heart and sole. Now it doesn't have anyone who will stand up for the employees or just do what is right. Long term success means showing employees are valued. The old CEO was at least willing to fight for what he believed in. The new one fights for himself at the expense of those who do the real work.
