Pluspunten

-Great addition to your CV if you're advocacy-focused -Growth depending on your department/office

Minpunten

-Poor work/life balance. Managers live for the job and expect you to do the same. This is particularly true of those who have been in the org a long time are are used to burnout/working through holidays and illness as, "just the way things are." -Bad behavior. Bullying staff, withholding critical information to maintain a sense of control, pitting employees against each other, and requiring loyalty and praise to advance are a few of the manipulation techniques that pass for management with some mid-levels. May be common, but still incredibly disappointing. -Low morale. Hard to explain, but the whole place feels sick.

Pluspunten

The internship is virtual and not time-consuming.

Minpunten

It's upsetting to write this negative review about this internship, especially since it was with the NAACP (an organization I deeply respect). Unfortunately, it was a waste of time interning for the Fairfax NAACP. They were very disorganized and tedious. Also, this internship was UNPAID. First, before I started the internship, they schedule me to have a orientation (like in March or April) way before my start date. They complained to me about not disclosing with them that I was starting in June even though I did during the my interview with them. Second, I was supposed to start early in the beginning of June and was waiting to be assigned to a complainant. I wasn't assigned until three weeks after my start date. This is ridiculous because on their database they had plenty of complainants who needed to be assigned. Third, when I did get assigned complainants most of them were from months even years ago. I didn't hear back from any of them until near the end of my internship. The complainant told me that she did contact the Fairfax NAACP about her discrimination case but they never respond to her so she moved on to another organization for assistance. Also, I did little to no research. The only thing I researched was the location of another NAACP organization that one of the complainants was near. Other than that, I didn't research anything I felt that was related to the legal-field or expanding my knowledge on the legal-field. If I could go back I would not have taken this internship to begin with. I was expecting to gain valuable experience, but instead I was left feeling frustrated and disappointed.
