How would you handle an equal level co-worker causing problems?

I told them I deal with my sister and her problems all the time. I try to find out why she is causing problems and if there is anything I can do to help her. Usually people are taken back by being nice when they are trying to create drama, also if you know what the real problem is you are more likely to be able to help.
