Working at Greenpeace was a disappointing experience overall.

During my time collaborating with the Photo Desk, I experienced a markedly different working environment—one that felt structured, supportive, and aligned with the organisation's core values. The team demonstrated a high level of professionalism, clear communication, and a genuine commitment to collaboration, which allowed me to contribute more effectively and grow in confidence. In particular, Jon Novis's leadership stood out. His approach fostered a culture of clarity, encouragement, and mutual respect, creating an environment where feedback felt constructive and development was actively supported. This had a direct impact on both the quality of my work and my overall experience.

While the organisation’s mission is strong and globally respected, the internal reality did not reflect those values. There was a clear disconnect between what Greenpeace promotes externally and how teams operate day-to-day. The culture felt driven by output and individual performance rather than collaboration, support, or shared purpose. Training and onboarding were minimal, leaving staff to navigate expectations without proper guidance. For an organisation of this scale, the lack of structure and support was surprising and, at times, set people up to struggle. Team dynamics were also a concern. The environment could be cliquey and, at times, unprofessional, with a noticeable undercurrent of negativity. Rather than fostering a supportive workplace, it often felt competitive and, in some cases, undermining. I also experienced a lack of awareness and sensitivity around dyslexia, which was particularly disappointing given the organisation’s public stance on inclusivity. This is an area where much more understanding and practical support is needed. There are passionate individuals within Greenpeace, but until there is stronger alignment between its stated values and internal culture, the employee experience will continue to fall short.
