IKEA is een concern van Zweedse oorsprong, met vestigingen over de hele wereld. Het richt zich op het aanbieden van betaalbare meubelen en woonartikelen, die deels zelf in elkaar gezet moeten worden. Het concept bestaat uit het aanbieden van kwaliteitsartikelen tegen een lage prijs. Er worden eisen gesteld aan het productieproces. IKEA eist bijvoorbeeld van zijn leveranciers dat er bij de productie geen gebruik van kinderarbeid wordt gemaakt. Maar IKEA stelt met al zijn leveranciers ook plannen op om op gebied van andere sociale aspecten en aangaande de milieubelasting stapsgewijs tot verbetering te komen. Er zijn 301 IKEA-vestigingen in 37 landen (juli 2009). 267 vestigingen in 25 landen zijn in het bezit van IKEA zelf, de rest bestaat uit franchises. In 1984 opende IKEA zijn eerste vestigingen in België in Zaventem en Ternat. Daarna volgden Hognoul (1985, bij Luik), Wilrijk (1985, bij Antwerpen), Arlon-Sterpenich (2005), Anderlecht (Brussel) (2005) en Gent (2008). De vestiging van Zaventem verhuisde in 2002 naar een nieuw gebouw op het industrieterrein, op enkele honderden meters van de vorige vestiging. In deze vestiging vindt men ook het Service Office en Customer Care Centre van IKEA BE. De opening van Ikea Gent viel samen met de sluiting van de vestiging in Ternat. In Genk heeft IKEA een groot distributiecentrum. In elke winkel van het concern staat, vaak bij zowel de personeels- en de klanteningang, het concept groot op een muur geschreven: 'Het aanbieden van een zo breed mogelijk assortiment functionele woonartikelen van een goede vormgeving, tegen zulke lage prijzen dat zoveel mogelijk mensen in staat zijn deze artikelen te kopen'. Een onderdeel van het IKEA-concept is mechanische verkoop, dat inhoudt dat er meestal geen verkoper nodig is om een klant aan zijn gewenste artikel te helpen. Op het prijskaartje dat aan het artikel hangt, kan een klant zien waar hij het artikel kan pakken, zij het een bepaalde afdeling, het zelfbedieningsmagazijn voor de kassa's of dat een klant naar een verkoopbalie toe moet en dat het artikel na afrekenen voor de klant wordt klaargezet bij een afhaalbalie of extern magazijn (talon). Het is dus ongebruikelijk dat een verkoper een klant benadert.
