Pluspunten

Health care is decent. Pension is OK but not great (no 401k match)- but you can get that at any rail job. Pay is just so so.

Minpunten

Short and to the point. This company should have a class action lawsuit against it by its workforce. I’m not a complainer - in fact a hard worker with a college degree. I’ve held many jobs in transportation. Massive harassment. Constantly time off for smallest infractions like shoes not tied and safety vest with a button that came undone. Forget to say over on the radio once in a day (they listen). Your phone could/and will ring day and night with literally no heads up ordering you to work. Usually about 3 days a weak you will stumble into work with just a few hours sleep. Better be on your toes with no sleep because 30 days off without pay constantly. It’s insane! I’m not exaggerating. They want you to work unsafe very quickly or you will have management in your face screaming from the 100’s of cameras that are constantly watching you. When you are in your many investigations the union can’t do much but take it to arbitration. So the company decides how much time you get. Their is no discussing it. Arbitration is unusually backed up from 1-3 years in the future. Old union but unfortunately very weak. In the mean time guys have lost everything, some including their families. Very very sad place to work. Most are stuck being in their 40’s or 50’s with not much for other possible career moves or skills that transfer. Everyone’s fearful and understands that today could be your last. You will have to listen to people complaining and negativity ALL day long. It really sucks! Oh they usually only can work 10 hours witch is straight time and then get cut off before any OT can be made. Contract is terrible and you will be away from home for 6 days with just 48 hours off. Then you come home exhausted. You have to sleep - literally no time off. I was very blessed to get out and find a different career path in transportation. I, even including most management there, despise this company!

Pluspunten

Lots of opportunities to provide value

Minpunten

Poor leadership at the C-level. CIO has no control over the direction of the IT landscape beyond what is dictated to her by the CEO and other business owners. The IT environment is almost solely controlled by the demands of the business at the cost of being able to manage and adapt to needs. 20 years behind the market in the adoption of cloud technology. Existing cloud strategy was built by engineers pressed into the role of architects and learning as they progressed along. No automation or DevOps presence whatsoever outside what the platform teams use to simplify their own workloads. Remote work is considered a 4-letter word and is extremely frowned upon as anything other than an as-needed and pre-approved option. Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery are still done using backups and shadow copies of key infrastructure, and those key systems are decided upon at the time the tests are planned instead of testing the company's infrastructure in its entirety. Data centers are geographically separated, but are significantly disparate in what is physically hosted and accessible. Recognition and rewards are overtly encouraged, but are covertly handed out based on the level of visibility and impact to the business and stakeholders. Senior leadership constantly touts open-door policy and approachability, but give off vibes and impressions opposite of the overt policy. The company puts on a show of being diverse and inclusive. Case in point, the hiring of a female CIO. The problem is that working within an 'old boys network' leadership, it doesn't matter how inclusive and diverse the company appears because those elements are never given the opportunity to show their value.
