I didn't buy that Capital One was a tech company that happens to do banking until I got here. I don't quite think they're as tech-forward as an AI startup, but they do as much as one can imagine an established bank can do in terms of being tech forward. Exciting work is done here. I won't say they take risks, but they take chances on highly technical solutions with cutting edge architecture more than one would expect and its worked to their benefit. As a product manager, in the right space, you can really learn a lot. Especially on platforms.
Minpunten
Performance evaluation is brutal. You'll run into the typical competing priorities and politics between different LOBs here you'll probably find anywhere. That said, the impact is extra tough here. Performance evaluations every 6 months is no joke. The keep-your-job politics mixed with promotion politics leads to people using whatever leverage they have to make personally beneficial decisions with real technical architecture and strategy -- sometimes to the detriment of someone else's timeline and potentially job. First place I've been where you many legitimately do solid work and still get PIPed. Have seen it before, but not as much as here.
