Minpunten
All of sudden TOEFL leadership has decided it's a great idea to not announce shifts added at the last minute. This discourteousness results not only in missed shifts -- because, amazing as it may be to TOEFL leadership, people do actually have lives and other jobs -- but also late logins ( as well as setting aside whatever plans you had for the day because you need the money). Otherwise, you're marked down as a "no show." I have no idea -- does being a no show for a last minute shift reflect negatively on my performance overall? It's a mystery. They're even doing this to scoring leaders. The level of inconsiderate behavior here is off the charts. Not only is it incredibly rude, it's disrespectful. They're showing how much they don't value employees. This is unethical behavior toward employees, and it's unfair to test takers who count on those employees. TOEFL leadership expects raters and leaders to submit availability for the entire month -- a month in advance -- for a test that will often cancel shifts just barely within the 24-hour window, so you don't get paid. OR they reduce the hours of your shift at the last minute. Now, in addition to doing that, they're confirming shifts the day before and not telling anyone. When I called my SL about this, she said five other raters had called to say the same thing -- they had no idea they'd been confirmed for a shift. Apparently, though we weren't told to do so, we're supposed to check the schedule EVERYDAY. This is problematic not only because it's unreasonable to expect someone with 10 shifts out of an entire month to keep checking daily for one that MIGHT be added, but because other commitments obviously may prohibit checking the scheduler daily. But really the bottom line is -- why would any employer expect an employee to not know their own schedule to the point they have to check EVERYDAY? They're allowed to suddenly cancel on us, yet we're supposed to be perpetually available? Not only to work, but to the take time out to check THEIR scheduling changes? Since the TOEFL is always hiring, I'm not sure if this is an attempt to shed raters because they have too many -- or they're just a really lousy employer. The level of disrespect inclines me to think they're trying to get rid of us. After all, why do this to leaders also? If that leader can't work at the last minute, the entire roster is unable to score. I work on other tests for ETS -- and have worked for ETS for 12 years -- and all of them notify raters and leadership if additional shifts have been added BECAUSE THEY WANT TO GET TESTS SCORED, NOT PLAY GAMES. I've lost all respect for this test. It's no longer a priority.
