Minpunten

The worst corporate environment I have ever been in... It’s an absolute disaster in terms of any meaningful work content. Management just brags about how great Expedia's results are. There’s absolutely no point in considering working for Expedia because it’s just a pure waste of time. All the managers here are like after-school supervisors, completely and utterly incompetent, and in the end, they can’t teach or pass on anything valuable to you. My manager was utterly useless, just checking if I came to work, and when I asked questions like how I can best help a customer, I was told to look it up on the internet. What’s the point of such people? This place in Prague is like a working allegory. Then I witnessed unbelievable bullying at the workplace, where hardworking and intelligent people were cornered and treated like sheep in a herd by utterly stupid and small-minded people who disgustingly sucked up to their superiors. These people were forced to resign under threats and blackmail. I felt sorry for them. The hypocrisy and falseness were only heightened when we were promised that we would never be moved to another team where you'd have ten times more work for the same pay, which did happen to several people. Imagine how – they literally drew lots in a closed room where no one was allowed in or to participate. And the people who were promised a "protection umbrella" for two months to get trained were eventually accused of manipulation and summoned before an investigative committee. Several people were fired for no reason because they tailor the rules to suit the situation that benefits them. In this opaque system, they always blame and fire someone. So, you never have any certainty or solid ground to stand on. People here are anxious, frustrated, depressed, and stressed that they could be blamed and fired like dirty dogs. At Expedia, an employee is just a number, and that’s how they treat you. The HR department is arrogant and has absolutely no integrity, only further supporting this toxic environment. And as for benefits, you’re paid like some intern, given a basic salary for Prague, where the cost of living is almost the same as in Berlin. Moreover, real wages in Prague have dropped by around 50% since 2018 due to inflation. So, before you even consider an offer, deduct half of the salary and voilà – welcome to Prague, the Czech Republic, where at the end of the month, you’ll be lucky if you can afford a beer. Great perspective, right? I witnessed dozens of employees requesting raises, and they were never heard, arrogantly dismissed by management. So, people in Prague survive on a 2018 salary with 2024 inflation, where prices have brutally increased by 100% to 200%, from services to goods. And when Expedia offers you a 5% raise, you honestly start laughing, and they look at you as if they’re handing out gold medals. It’s genuinely laughable. People last here a maximum of two years and then move on. The atmosphere is horrendous, and even though they offer you a free Coke from the fridge, don’t even bother stepping in. The whole place is built on awful values.

Pluspunten

Constant state of transformation is ripe environment for new hires and functional experts from big name tech companies

Minpunten

Pre-covid the culture was really special. Collaborative, engaging, people-centric, with a unifying mission to enable travel for the world. Since covid there has been a revolving door of executive leadership, and with each round, they throw out the current strategy to try something "new" without building from the current or past successes. Constant change, but no clear vision or strategy of what they are trying to change to. Lack of strategy and low risk tolerance leads to too many priorities with not enough investment to move the needle in anything. Quarterly layoffs, but executed quietly team by team so as not to make news. No psychological safety. Talent strategy since covid is to hire externally over internal promotions to gain "functional expertise" therefore difficult to grow your career. Siloed divisions not working towards common goal. Lacks operating model maturity needed for a company of this size likely do to revolving door of execs and priorities. A cash cow company with an identity crisis trying to be an AI innovator. Build vs buy mentality slows them down. Too many exec pet projects that aren't vetted with proper business cases.
