Pluspunten

Large non-profit with lots of schedule flexibility and lots of programs. I saw them be very accommodating with some employees. Good way to get entry-level experience in social services. Management is okay, with some better than others.

Minpunten

Very large staff, sometimes strange alliances on the staff, and some long-time employees act like they 'run the place', and you have to adjust to them rather than compromise. Also very, very limited growth opportunities for non-Social Workers.

Cooperative environment. The rest of the staff were often willing to help.

This was, hands down, the worst employment experience I've ever had. Since the program I worked at was situated several blocks from Goddard Headquarters, there was little to no oversight of the Executive Director, who was an absolute tyrant to all four employees under her. In the nearly three years I worked there, I met her direct supervisor all of two times, and he did not introduce himself. I found myself micromanaged to the 9th degree; no positive feedback ever given, constant passive/aggressive feedback which I "think" was perhaps meant to be constructive but nevertheless came out as a very personal, direct attack on my very character most of the time, and frightened, siloed fellow employees who just kept their heads down and prayed for the day to pass while applying for other jobs. HR seemed to want to play referee between me and this ED of the program, and offered few, if any, practical solutions to the management impasse. While the person managing me was fantastic in her main job, her people skills were non-existent, and she had no business whatsoever managing other human beings. Despite multiple negative exit interviews mentioning her directly from from employees, nothing, to my knowledge, was ever done, let alone followed up on by Goddard HR. This experience shattered my professional confidence; I am still recovering from it nearly two years later, and in therapy explicitly because of it. DO NOT accept a position here before speaking with multiple people who both currently work at the program you are applying for AND people who are former employees of the same program. DO NOT go blindly in like I did. You will regret it.
