Great place to get experience, not a great place to linger at for too long. Stay long enough to get your sign-on bonus and add the experience to your resume, but get out before you’re burned out. Insurance: allowed to have a domestic partner on your policy, don’t have to be married, just have a notarized form validating partnership. If you’re going to work for Fairfax, Woodburn is a lovely place to be at! From pre-op to PACU, everyone is happy and works well together. Their director is a wonderful leader and it’s hard to find positions open because no one ever wants to leave! So if you see an opening at woodburn—APPLY. They offer a commuter bus for employees in Woodbridge, Manassas, and Gainesville. Saves you money on commute.

Management will not advocate for employees, tons of favoritism, and they are EXPERTS at burning you out and somehow not paying you for it. Example: you sign up for an extra shift, you show up, get the toughest assignment, then they’ll send you home early so you don’t get the full bonus pay. Bonus shifts are offered in hour increments, ex: $50 for 4 hours. They’ll send you home at hour 3.5. If you’re going through personal hardships, they don’t give a flying bird. Pregnant and have to pee? Don’t expect to be given a break. The Women’s hospital is “pro breastfeeding” and they have this beautiful gift shop dedicated to breastfeeding, yet if you are an employee that is pumping, don’t expect a pump break (even though they have a policy that grants you a pump break). PTO accrues per hour worked, which takes a while to accumulate, but don’t feel hopeful, because you’ll never get time off approved. The only people who ever got time off approved in the 6 years I worked there were the ones who had been there for 20+ years, I am not exaggerating. Big wage gaps and pay discrimination. Ex: they offer nurses $1,000 bonus, the surgical techs only get $450—and who’s doing the more laborious job? Yep, you guessed it. For those seeking religious or medical exemptions (from the you know what), forget it, they will grant you a “permanent exemption” and then a few months later ask you to resubmit. They have this extremely ridiculous and long exemption form too. Opportunity for advancement? Sure! Climb the ladder to ST 3, but don’t expect to get a leadership position. (Might be possible in the Main OR, but not in the Women’s OR). Low pay HORRIBLE PTO package Management will take credit for ideas suggested by employees and never give credit where it’s due.

Good benefits, professional colleagues, and strong technical talent. In the IT, analytics, and data space, Inova has been more forward-looking than many health systems, with willingness to adopt modern tools and practices. There is also relatively less bureaucracy compared with some other healthcare organizations.

Minpunten

For AI and Data Solutions career growth and scope can feel heavily influenced by prior relationships and leadership networks. When new leaders join, they often bring trusted colleagues from previous organizations, and those individuals may receive faster access to strategic work, visibility, and advancement opportunities. This can create the perception that internal merit, institutional knowledge, and long-term contribution are not always enough to access the best opportunities unless an employee is already connected to a senior leader or part of an incoming leadership network. Over time, this can make the culture feel fragmented across different legacy groups rather than like one unified Inova culture. There is a high level of nepotism and if you are not coming from Sharp, Parkland or Novant your growth, scope and visibility will be limited and you might be sidelined to grunt work.
