General facilities (NOT work space for most senior level foreign workers and advisors). Telecom space Market opportunities for company growth. A few really nice folks (like in any place).

Minpunten

Wasteful spending, rites and rituals, renovations, procurement, ceremonies, etc. Office space politics. Every year a large batch of Saudi's get promotions (especially to Grade 35, Section Leader). Then there is a huge rotation of space to create offices for these Section Leaders at the expense of even more senior and experienced foreign advisors. Section leader offices are come with a complete standard inventory of furnishings. Many foreign senior level advisors (some with Director-, VP-, or higher-level past experience from elsewhere) are pushed into cubicles, or two sided work spots or simple long form / open-space desks with no privacy or dignity. This shuffle happens regardless of the fact that most of these foreign advisors are paid significantly MORE than these section leaders, and perform work of significantly more impact and value than the local Section leaders. It's a big ritual of 'Keeping Up Appearances.' - Too frequent change of leadership and staff. Too many transformation programs. - STC is slow to change, even as telecom requires fast and furious speed. - I've seen many new local employees sit around for days, weeks, and even months with no real work. It is as if they hire first, and then try to figure out something for the employees. - Too much emphasis on clocking in by 8:30. Not enough emphasis on real contribution. - Many recognition events in departments are a sham: I've seen too many loafers get recognition awards. - Performance ratings are more about helping Saudi nationals qualify for the home loan program than about their performance. Foreign workers are invariably given lower ratings so that nationals can get the higher ratings. This reinforces a really bad culture of entitlement. - Too many people in management and leadership who are really very bad at it. - Too many people Grade hunting and going for Director- / GM- level jobs in areas they know nothing about. - STC could be significantly more profitable and competitive without the above forms of waste, 'wasta', and without the politics at the board and other levels.
