- Complete lack of leadership and vision on the executive level. Constantly trying to chase industry trends without any thought or planning - Limited promotional opportunities. Almost impossible to switch to any different roles apart from the one you were initially hired for - For an academic organization, fear of real innovation and improvement unless it comes from the Provost level (who really knows nothing about the daily operation) - Toxic work environment that lack transparency when it comes to pay and promotion. Creates a constant sense of fear of saying something wrong and being booted out - Very little willingness to listen to those who actually do the work and their ideas for improving the processes they're supposed to follow -

Pluspunten

After several years in this role, I continue to enjoy my facilitation work at eCornell. The day-to-day typically involves a few hours of flexible, yet engaging work, which fits well into a busy schedule. One of the most rewarding aspects is the opportunity to connect with students from around the world and learn how they apply course concepts within their own professional contexts. The live virtual sessions create space for authentic, unscripted interactions, which keeps the work interesting and meaningful. eCornell also does a strong job of recognizing facilitators’ contributions. In my experience, there is consistent support from managers and staff, along with ongoing opportunities for professional development. I’ve especially appreciated the ability to learn from Cornell faculty and staff through certificate programs and continued facilitation training. Overall, I would recommend this role to those who enjoy networking, continuous learning, and engaging with a diverse, global audience.

The organization has undergone significant change over the past several years, and while that has brought challenges, leadership, including the CEO, has been transparent throughout. Teams have had to remain flexible. However, there is a strong sense of collaboration across departments to work toward the best outcomes for the organization. One of the most valuable benefits as an employee is access to eCornell certificate programs. This has allowed me to pursue professional development opportunities that would have otherwise been financially out of reach in my previous role. Many team members, including leadership, actively engage in continuous learning, which helps foster a culture of growth and development. I have also felt genuinely supported by leadership and colleagues. Shortly after starting, I experienced a significant medical challenge, and the level of flexibility, understanding, and kindness I received was meaningful and not something I’ve experienced at all organizations. The enrollment team, while geographically distributed across the United States, is made up of caring, dedicated professionals who are committed to their work, supporting one another, and supporting our students.

Minpunten

I think this is a common challenge for larger organizations, and especially those that are fully remote. Communication across teams can be inconsistent at times, and processes could be more streamlined to improve efficient. When changes are recommended, helping resisters move forward can also be challenging. This said, the challenge is recognized and I see departments actively working to address this.
