“The quieter day will never come. All we have is ‘now’.” Powerful words from our Director of Water Services Ian Rule at the first of four workshops with frontline managers on Leading Safer Every Day, our unifying new approach to health, safety and wellbeing. Set in the beautiful city of Lincoln and led by our Head of Safety Lucinda Gilfoyle, the workshop was an inspiring day bringing managers together across Anglian Water and our alliance partners, to share experiences and pledge commitment to making work a positive contributor to people’s health, safety and wellbeing. Safer Every Day is our values in action: it’s down to all of us, moment by moment, choice by choice. The passion in the room was palpable and I’m excited to be part of this movement. On now to workshops in Norwich, then Bedfordshire, then continually onwards through our organisation. Safer Every Day never stops! #safereveryday
As the flattest, driest and fastest growing region in the country, we’re facing significant challenges. With a growing population and more extreme weather, sewer networks are under extra pressure. In addition to this, every year, our teams clear around 37,000 blockages— 80% of which are completely avoidable. Wet wipes remain the biggest offender because unlike toilet paper, wipes don’t break down the same way causing serious blockages that lead to floodings and pollutions. Through our Just Bin It campaign and the launch of our proactive enforcement programme we’ve brought to life the scale of the blockage challenge. With the help of hedgehog-like devices that have been deployed into our network, we’ve been able to track the source of the problem to inform our work with customers to change their behaviours in hotspot communities. It's thanks to these devices that we've already seen a significant reduction in the number of wipes in our network in areas such as Northamptonshire. Following successful trials, this week we've been deploying our hedgehogs in other hotspot areas like Spalding. But the work doesn't stop there. Which is why, we've launched our Just Bin It toolkit. It includes everything you need to spread the word about only putting the right things down the toilets and sinks. This year marks a milestone for one of our region's most vital water resources - Grafham Water, which celebrates 60 years since construction completed. At a time when temperatures are particularly hot, our region's reservoirs are at the heart of protecting our water supply. Just a few miles from Huntingdon, Grafham is England’s third-largest reservoir. Built due to the growing need for reliable water supply in the 1960's, Grafham Water was an ambitious project which eventually formed part of our crucial Ruthamford resilience scheme, along with Rutland and Pitsford reservoirs. Today, Grafham Water supplies clean drinking water for millions across the region and has also become a haven for wildlife and a thriving recreational space. But as we celebrate sixty years of Grafham Water, we also look to the future. With a changing climate and 1 million new homes expected in our region over the next 25 years, the pressure on our water supplies is increasing. Which is why we're building two new reservoirs in Lincolnshire & the Fens Delivering infrastructure on this scale is a major undertaking but something that is an absolute necessity - which the Government has echoed with the announcement of plans to fast-track the planning process for these projects. The completion of these two new reservoirs will not only ensure we can continue to supply water for generations to come, but also deliver significant social, economical and environmental benefits to our region.
Yesterday, the National Drought Group announced it was ramping up its operational response after the driest spring in 132 years. While the recent rainfall has been positive, it hasn't been enough to stop drought declarations in some parts of the country. Drought preparedness has been at the heart of our long-term planning since the 1990's, and this sustained investment is the reason our regional water resources remain at a healthy level. But our region is changing fast, and we need to take further action to protect future water supplies. From progressing plans to build two new reservoirs to installing more than 330km of strategic pipeline to carry water from the wettest parts of the region to the driest and making sure all our customers have smart meters in their homes by the end of the decade. This investment will help to reduce demands on sensitive sources such as chalk streams and rivers and keep taps running. Our teams continue to monitor the situation closely. We’re also working with our customers to highlight small swaps that can be made to reduce water usage at home. Read more: https://lnkd.in/evH35HMb #WaterSecurity #WaterSupplies #Drought

With the rain forecasted this weekend, it's easy to forget that the region remains drier than average. And while these short showers are welcome, they don't tell the whole story. Drought preparedness has been at the heart of what we do for decades. Through investment and long-term planning, we've not needed to implement a hose pipe ban in over ten years - and aren't currently forecasting one. Thanks to the long-term rainfall we saw this winter, groundwater and reservoirs were replenished, preparing us for the drier months ahead. Water resources respond to long-term patterns, not short bursts of rain - which is why we look at weather trends in aggregate over seasons, not just week to week or month to month. So while river and groundwater levels might be below average currently, as of April this year, our reservoirs are over 90% full. But we continue to manage our supplies carefully and encourage our customers to use water wisely - rain or shine. Read more about our water resources here: https://lnkd.in/eVBW4F2p
Bexwell to Isleham ✅ We recently completed the last of the pipework and mechanical fittings along the 33km stretch of our strategic pipeline from Bexwell to Isleham. With part of the pipeline running through the Fenlands – which has some of the most challenging ground conditions in the UK – this is a significant milestone for the pipeline to have reached, and a credit to our colleagues and supply chain partners who worked tirelessly on the delivery of the work. Our strategic pipeline is one of the largest infrastructures projects the UK has seen for a generation and we mustn't underestimate its importance. In a region that is officially classed as water stressed, this project will enable us to move water from the wettest parts of our region in North Lincolnshire, right down to the driest in Essex. Over 200km of pipe is already in the ground across SPA but this is just the start. Over the next five years, we’re planning to invest £365m in the pipeline – installing a further 200km of large, strategic water mains. This is about more than just water—it’s about keeping taps running so communities, businesses, and environment can flourish together. Last year our industry-leading smart meter programme hit some significant milestones as we finished installing our initial rollout of 1.1million smart meters across the region. As we head into our next business planning period, the work doesn’t stop there. We’re on track to reach our ambitious goal of delivering smart meters across the entire region by 2030 – an investment worth £153million. Together with our partners Arqiva, and alliance partners Kier Group and Clancy, we’re installing over 1,000 smart meters a day. Leaks on the pipework within customers’ homes accounts for up to a third of all leakage. As well as giving ourselves and our customers greater visibility of their water usage, the smart meters are great at helping us find these pesky, hard-to-see leaks. So far, using smart meter data, we’ve been able to find and fix an average of 14 litres of water per property per day in leaks since the rollout started. As the country’s driest region –with a rapidly growing population – detecting and fixing these leaks contributes significant to supporting growth and protecting our precious water supply💧. With around 1.1million smart meters left to install, it’s going to be a busy five years for our frontline teams. Find out more about our industry leading programme: https://lnkd.in/e_JMk2Gv.
