    Pluspunten

    GitHub has evolved considerably over the past year. From solidifying its vision, to exponentially expanding its B2B market presence, to an eventual acquisition by Microsoft. With regards to growth potential, the future has never been brighter.

    My experience at GitHub has been overwhelmingly positive, and the growth opportunities are abundant. With excellent leadership, numerous development opportunities, and a top-of-the-line benefits package, I can confidently say that I love my job.

    The vast majority of complaints relate to growing pains and management changes.

    Although none of these have impacted me directly, it is important to note that this is a major turning point in the company’s history.

    This company really tried to treat their employees as best as possible. There was the old saying of optimize for happiness which I feel like they really strived to achieve. I wish them all of the best in their acquisition by Microsoft.

    Can't think of any complaints that are present at the company that are not the usual development areas of any company.

    Pluspunten

    The benefits are outstanding the the pay is decent. There is a full bar at HQ if you are really into drinking.

    You don't have to use your real name. Everyone uses monikers like the 1995 movie, Hackers. You can even change your title to "Nasty Woman" before an election and that's HR approved.

    Minpunten

    The management lackluster and direction is constantly changing. Re-orgs occur quarterly due to the lack of experience and direction of leadership. At this point it's just rearranging the deck chairs of the Titanic. Anyone who has worked for a grown-up company will not be able to stand the immaturity.

    The positive reviews here don't surprise me. The majority of the company is young and lacks any experience. So to those people, a full bar and free lunch is a dream job. But the real story is one of paying lip service to volunteering and diversity. Organizing large volunteer efforts only to put in 30 minutes before leaving to go and spend several thousand dollars on a five star restaurant. But it's all okay because we selected a city to visit that is "diverse". Yes, that's their idea of diversity. Help out for 30 minutes in a poor community and then make sure you have a good time at your restaurant & bar only the top 1% of the population can afford.

    Pluspunten

    Working at a company like GitHub certainly is not for everyone. They do place a significant amount of trust on each employee to do what is right for the company, the customer and the values that we have to uphold. In saying this, if you are a self-motivated individual, you should find that GitHub is a place where you can truly thrive!

    1. Remote Work. Don't come in with preconceived notions. This is the real deal. You have the autonomy to pretty much create your own workflow. So don't feel guilty about that 30 minute nap after lunch on a Wednesday!

    2. Benefits. The benefits rock. Especially the T&E. Nope I'm not gonna be the one to spill the beans but you will be well satisfied upon receiving your benefits package!

    3. Positive environment. I read the earlier posts. I am somewhat newer so maybe I am still wearing rose colored glasses. But honestly, there seems to be an extremely positive culture.

    1. Sense of Entitlement. I do feel that some workers internally have a sense of entitlement type of feeling. As such, being as GitHub has generally been a company that empowers its workers, anytime something is changed to safeguard the company as a whole, or if something is implemented that doesn't go with someone's exact suggestion, people can get a bit touchy feely about it. (Hence some of the earlier reviews I imagine). The grass is NOT always greener on the other side.

    2. Onboarding. I loved onboarding. But it is quite confusing. This is always going to be a challenge with a company that focuses on being distributed like we are. But it is a notable challenge especially to some.

    I like my managers and my team. I don't feel as if I am 'too junior,' to sync up with high Leadership on a consistent basis. My overall feeling is that most people are truly trying their best here at GitHub. In so long as you have the will, someone will make a way!

    Pluspunten

    Great benefits, ability to work remotely, unlimited vacation, empathetic co-workers, interesting work and cutting-edge technology. Some teams and team-members are FANTASTIC to work with. Great group of people with awesome values. A good emphasis on opportunities to create a Women's and Binary group within the company and to give a voice to underrepresented poc. I have heard that they had harassment and other issues a few years ago, but my experience has been extremely positive with caring team-mates and overall a friendly and respectful culture that wants to make a positive difference. Personally, I love working here and I hope that the company will continue to get better. I am a remote employee and the ability to work remotely is amazing. It can really improve your quality of life.

    A confusing environment for new hires, CONSTANT change, some team-members are patronizing and hard to work with. Excited for the new future with Microsoft, but I am concerned that what made GitHub especial will be lost along the way.

    Great benefits, culture and perks. (the best in the industry)
    One of the best places I got to work for when it comes to their awesome remote policy.
    Overall, the employees thrive on support, and encouragement to perform your best work everyday.

    Minpunten

    There is no little to none leadership when it comes to expectations and goals set company wide.

    The recruiting team is an absolute mess. No expectations, POLITICS, FAVORITISM, and of course no set goals when it comes to employee growth.

    No set processes followed or implemented, consistent fire drills and no change.

    Politics and favoritism will lead to an absolute failure for team growth and culture.
    Management needs to follow what they sell to candidates.

    Poor and micro management being implemented in the team, neglected by seniors, will cause people to leave or feel burnt out. Change it.

    Minpunten

    Ever since the CEO stepped down, the company feels to me like its heading south. Many of the teams are floating on their own without managers/directors or any form of leadership. They put in product managers who have ZERO vision to be in charge of managing important features of Github. From being fairly transparent, they have started a "hush-hush" culture where you don't know where and how decisions are being made.

    This is not at all a good time to join GitHub. They hire and they fire very quickly if you don't fit into their culture of all-talk and get no real work done. Politics is heavily rewarded. Honesty and speaking your mind is frowned upon.

    Its time to take a closer look at the so called values that Github claims to stand for.

    Remote friendly work culture. A very expensive SF office space to work in for those who work in SF.

    Minpunten

    There is no leadership to speak of. From the Executives to middle management there is no experience and no direction. GitHub went from a "no managers" environment to promoting managers from within who lack management experience and training. This has led to a highly political, cliquey culture that favors "friends" and punishes those "outside of the circle".

    Chris Wanstrath's commitment to "Diversity & Exclusion" has led to hiring practices where managers say, "we're not hiring any more white males" or "we're not hiring that transgender person because they used to be a white male" or yet, "we're not interested in that black man. We really want to hire a woman for this role". All true statements personally heard. It has gotten to the point of reviewing the candidates Linkedin profile photo to see if they are a "good fit" for an interview. Wrong race? Wrong gender? Cancel the interview.

    There is no accountability and no ramifications to any of these actions. It's widely accepted and expected. This practice is so well known and runs so deep that very manager and director is complacent in this practice.

    Interview feedback is routinely deleted if it's not favorable for a "diversity hire". Didn't pass the technical interview? We'll delete that and give you an easier one so that a sub-par engineer can be hired. This has lead to the rapid decline of the engineering talent.

    Now that Microsoft has announced the deal to acquire GitHub they need to come in and clean house. Terminate all leadership that was promoted from within and all Executive staff. They have no experience to lead let alone be employed.

    The best thing for Microsoft would be to take the IP and rebuild the company with experienced leaders. GitHub is a more toxic and hostile culture than Uber. Except minus the revenue.

    Remote work environment offers flexibility. Office perks and HQ is top notch. Github product is still the de facto standard for developers and this helps when looking for your next job

    Minpunten

    It's hard to run the company effectively without a CEO and with leadership team that is constantly changing. Politics is rewarded over doing great work and everyone is only looking out for themselves as a result. Some of the best people I've worked with have left the company because of the toxic culture.

    Find someone to run this like a real company instead of running it down. Provide more transparency and accountability. Be present and plan ahead.

    - You can quickly get into a position to impact how coders collaborate around the world
    - GitHub's culture is very understanding that different people work best in different situations, and oftentimes have family obligations
    - A rapidly growing company where there is still the opportunity to move up (unlike at Google / Facebook)

    - Having an ongoing CEO search always give a cloud of ambiguity, but it seems like there is some good movement on that front
    - Whenever an organization undergoes culture change, there are bound to be people who prefer the old culture
