"Lots of fringe benefits, inconsistent leadership"

    SterSterSterSterSter
Huidige werknemer - Program Officer in New York, NY
      Niet aanbevolen

Ik werk voltijd bij Open Society Foundations voor 3 jaar

      Pluspunten

Free lunch, lots of other benefits, lots of opportunity to travel, talented and smart coworkers

      Minpunten

Recent changes in leadership don’t reflect interest in learning about philanthropy or listening to the lessons learned about how to be responsive to the field. Leaders are not hired for their ability or skills in management. OSF is unionized as response to leadership decisions that marginalized certain members of the staff. Talented, diverse staff but leadership is less diverse and often does not listen to the expertise...

good benefits (health care, vacation, 'free lunch', nice work stations), exposure to interesting topics and issues, diverse staff

      Minpunten

hiring overqualified junior staffers for poorly defined support level jobs, toxic work culture which is reinforced by senior management, low salaries, lack of accountability when managers abuse power, no mobility as junior staff

      Positief vooruitzicht

Ik werk voltijd bij Open Society Foundations voor 3 jaar

      Pluspunten

Excellent health care, retirement savings, transit benefits ... and free lunch

      Minpunten

Middle managers seem to come here to settle and do just enough to get by. It is like pasture-land. Poor middle managers are not kicked out. Those that are underneath that level will find little opportunity to grow or advance.

      Advies aan management

Do more extensive review of middle management, make 360 reviews more serious and taken more seriously by HR. Provide clearer paths for growth for entry-level.

"Great people and mission, global board a disgrace and too many terrible managers"

      Neutraal vooruitzicht

Ik heb voltijdgewerkt bij Open Society Foundations voor meer dan 8 jaar

      Pluspunten

The grounding of OSF in national civil society is an important one, and a strong contrast to many donors which operate from 50,000 feet. OSF can be creative, and has tolerance for risk taking, which can make it an exciting place to work. There are some amazing people inside the organization, and there's a culture of learning and exchange. It has taken on board some of its management problems, finally, and is making some...

      Minpunten

The global board is white, male, rich, North American or European, and very establishment. For a global organization this is a disgrace. There's also a very heavy presence of the Soros family, which adds to the lack of diversity (and innovation). They have tried to improve management training and oversight, and even removed some low hanging bad managers, but some really terrible managers remain, particularly in the...

      Negatief vooruitzicht

Ik heb voltijdgewerkt bij Open Society Foundations voor meer dan 10 jaar

      Pluspunten

If you're in the NYC or DC offices, you get amazing perks - as many of the reviews here attest to. This is because the president, most of upper management and many of the Global Board members, especially Soros himself, is American and they look inwards. This is the place to be if you are ambitious, career-driven at the cost of your soul, and have more than 10 years of experience when you join.

      Minpunten

      1. Corrupt organisation down to its core. From funding groups that Soros' friends run, or friends of management, to just plain laziness when it comes to grant-making in funding the same groups over and over and over again for decades. 2. Hypocrisy at all levels. From claiming to be bastions of human rights defenders while not finding new, smaller, grassroots, activist groups instead because it's too much work to evaluate...

Train your managers. Keep training them. Insist on quality people who are actually good managers, not promote people just because they've been at OSF for a long time. That's not good enough. Fire everyone at HR and replace them with competent, caring humans who actually value the people who work their souls out at OSF. Do something of substance about your diversity problem, and about your deep-rooted racism and...

      Pluspunten

      Benefits, location, travel, free food.

      Minpunten

Hierarchical, patriarchal, inhumane organisational structure that privileges power and white supremacy disguised under the ideology of human rights. Downright abusive management structure run by white men who use exuberant amounts of ‘liberal’ money to sell their ideology to underdeveloped countries. Literally, an awful place to work. Toxic work culture.

      Advies aan management

      Try being a person.
