    I enjoyed working for the company up until very recently.
    They provide you with everything, training, PPE, tools, a vehicle and I have a great manager.
    Regular pay rises and I enjoy the work.
    These things-up to now -had kept me working with the company for over 8 years.
    Since the teams grew tenfold to accomplish the 2020 target, and the new merger with Npower was announced, the company is sadly nothing like it was.

    The problem with SSE is the bureaucracy and the blame culture.
    It can take months and several departments to get anything done.
    Processes change so often that you cannot keep up, due to the company wanting to shift as much responsibility away from them onto you- the engineer, and if you fall foul of any procedure or procedural change you’ll find yourself sitting opposite a manager who’s never met you before quoting FO-MET code 190 paragraph 6, subsection D like you have a photographic memory for every SSE procedure and pretty much every GSUIR regulation that they have a law for.

    They pride on H&S, and to be fair, we need H&S, but it’s come to a point where it is just ridiculous, and the bottom line really with SSE’s safety culture, is that it’s all designed so you cannot sue them.
    Anything that can possibly happen to you will be countered with something they give you, a PowerPoint you’ve been made to watch or a handout you’ve signed for.
    The PPE whilst doing the simplest of tasks is completely OTT, so imagine trying to roll a cigarette with a pair of boxing gloves on and you get the idea.

    If you are going to drive any vehicle at SSE, words of advice: get a Dashcam, if you have an accident it’s a lot easier for you if you have video evidence of yours or a third parties mistake, SSE punish the smallest of driving errors, woe betide you if you scrape or damage your vehicle, a camera will get you out of a lot of unnecessary aggravation and months of uncertainty, if you can show you weren’t at fault- or how you were at fault-via video evidence.
    Get a shoulder mounted camera and a gazillion gigabyte drive to store it all on too and video every job you do, because when a customer throws his hoover into the understairs cupboard after you’ve left and disturbs a pipe and smells gas, you will need everything you can to prove you’ve done a job correctly, you’ll be automatically guilty until you can prove you’re not and nobody will back you up, you’ll spend months in limbo whilst department after department kick the ball back and forth whilst you sweat and sink into depression wondering if you are going to afford your mortgage next month.
    This has happened to many excellent engineers that I know, ones that have been around for years, ones that know their job back to front and take great pride in what they do, ones with families and young children, and I’ve felt so sorry for them knowing that they had done a professional job to the best of their ability.
    Finding themselves “off the tools” for months, utterly dejected and questioning themselves.

    If you get the feeling that they do not trust you to do your job independently then you’d be absolutely right, you’ll have to call in and email every termination, and THEY will decide if you can go ahead or not, your judgement, as the professional onsite, will mean diddly squat.
    And you’ll have to take photos of before, during and after your meter change, for them on your toughpad, to prove your competence on each job.
    Make sure you take enough evidence pics for your own records on your own phone too! One day you may need them- as explained above.

    RTEs justify their existence by going around to your previous jobs finding anything they can to flag you up.
    Things so subtle as some outer insulation in a customer junction box that might be cut back a couple of mm, just something you missed or do not see due to the spaghetti your dealing with, and might only be visible with a mirror similar to the one a dentist uses to look in your mouth- an RTEs favourite tool.
    This might have been there since 1978 and not at all a problem, but hey, it shows he’s salary is justified.

    Coaches know nothing and give you little support.
    Our coach calls me for advice, then a week later, he’s out auditing me - a strange paradox if there ever was one.

    To sum up: SSE just want to get meters on the wall, everything that surrounds that is a contradictory fog and a ruse to please the regulator, confuse their employees and cover their own backsides to continue to pour money into their shareholders coffers and keep the government happy that they are meeting the 2020 target.
    SMICOP rules are institutionally bent and even blatantly broken to achieve this.
    My feeling is that someone will be killed soon but it will be the poor engineer with mouths to feed who will end up in court.

    Advies aan management

    Train your new engineers properly.
    Support them.
    Slim down your management teams.
    Trust your people to do the job.
    Stop changing procedures and codes and adding paperwork, it distracts from the job in hand and causes mistakes and forgetfulness.
    Revise the kind of people you employ as RTEs, a few are great professionals with a fountain of knowledge, and provide tremendous support but a huge number of them are just undermining the engineers, massaging their own egos and justifying their salaries, and worryingly, I have found that a lot of what they say is wrong.
