The absolute best move I ever made was to stop working for ATS. This advice is more towards English speaking foreigners living in the Czech Republic, but if you're Czech and can read English, then this applies to you too. So what's bad about this company? Firstly the organizational structure. Unlike in a professional corporation or larger company, ATS in the Czech Republic's management structure consists of 1 country manager and then your direct manager, who reports to the product owner. The product owners are the unofficial bosses, who really run things, and who is technically the most senior manager you will encounter, while your direct manager is more like a team lead. There is no HR department or other such structure. Which means there's no provisioning for inevitabilities such as personal conflicts between employees (or employer). In this sense, the company operates very much like a startup. This means that either you're going to be a fit in the team, but if you're not it can and most likely will cost you your job. There's also very little in the line of internal transfers. You're hired for a specific role and while the company at large might cover a lot of ground, at least in Czech Republic there's very little opportunity for career progression. So for this reason and others, I can't with a clear conscience recommend this company to potential employees. There's no direct way to fix this, the experience from an employees point of view is like working for a loosely flung together startup, either you will get along with your team or you won't, but make no mistake even though it's a relatively small company, it's also a hornets nest of office politics. In my experience the salaries too are below what can be considered market related, although I guess this depends on your ability to negotiate upfront. In terms of company benefits, well there are no extras. You do not get things like meal tickets or phone allowances or anything like this, other than the expected work laptop. I mean to keep it fair, yes it's good that ATS have offices in the Czech Republic and contribute by creating a few jobs for both Czechs and foreigners. On the other hand is it a great working experience that's actually good for your career? Most likely not, not as a developer. There are much better employers in the Czech Republic. If I compare where I work now. It's no comparison. I have a very good relationship with my direct manager, I also have my own product and product team. Besides this I have more benefits and truly feel valued and appreciated. I'll also add, when I left ATS, I was told in very clear terms "You'll have the same problem in the next job". This is because I had a personal conflict with one of the product owners. Well in the end, I guess that prediction was proved wrong, because over 3 years later I'm very happy in new position. I earn more money, have more responsibilities and am taken seriously. I would summarize as ATS Czech Republic, is a very good fit for people without high expectations or who live in Novy Jicin and due to low number of companies in this area, just need any job they can find. But if you're serious about your career then I would avoid this company at all costs.
