You're paid based on how many articles you write, and it can get pretty high if you're active, but don't expect a per-word rate. The way things are structured is also not like freelancing, but if you're looking to be more established, build a personal fan base, and contribute regularly, you won't be disappointed. Creative freedom is decidedly limited. The site has an established style and general voice, and you'll be expected to follow it. After all, the readers want to read AH, not your personal tech blog. That said, you're welcome to make your articles sound like "you"; implement your personal style, put your knowledge and background to work for readers, and build your articles to make the kind of reader experience and topic flow you would want if you were a reader. It can be tough and it takes time to learn, but it is rewarding. The site tends to skip a lot of hot topics in the interest of playing it safe and not presenting any bias, so you miss the opportunity to cover a lot of hot-button stuff in the tech world. Understandable, but at times disappointing.

I think all of the editors had their own, different opinion on how the articles should be written. You would receive feedback from 5 editors throughout the day and to me, no one seemed to be on the same page. Plus you had some editors that were stricter than others. Not recommended for anyone who ever makes writing mistakes (which would be...anyone)
