Backtrace is a great company with a real focus on their people and customers. I've been working with Backtrace for almost two years and have seen the company grow in size and really up-level their organizational maturity. As a consultant, I work with many start-ups, and I’ve been quite impressed with the level of care and thought that Backtrace places when it comes to supporting their people. Well thought out systems for hiring, onboarding, and performance management, just to name a few, have really created a sense of stability and consistency across the company. Some of the other things that I love about Backtrace: - Backtrace has a really welcoming and playful culture which makes it a fun place to work. - People are empathetic and collaborative and really care about the product and the mission of the company. - They keep the bureaucracy to a minimum and are always open to exploring ways to simplify and streamline how they work with an eye on minimizing pain and overly burdensome processes. - Flexibility to work from home when needed and of course all the tools needed to make remote working successful. - Alignment at the top. This is a solid strength of Backtrace’s leadership team and their ability to strategize and align the entire company around clear objectives and goals. Everyone knows how their work fits into the bigger goals of the company. - Transparency. One example that stands out is the regular company-wide meetings where they share how the company is performing against their goals. These meetings also offer an opportunity for anyone in the company to provide feedback, share insights, and ask questions directly to the leadership team. - Fun perks, activities, and team outings. From weekly company lunches to week-long onsite team visits, the Backtrace leadership team creates tons of opportunities for employees to bond, learn, and grow as a community. - Leadership is very open to feedback from employees and provides many avenues for people to be heard. - A real focus on employee benefits and ensuring people are taken care of and treated with respect. In short, Backtrace is a company where you can work on challenging projects, with some really brilliant people and have some fun along the way.

Nothing to really call out as a con. When the leadership team runs into challenges or areas that need improvement, they run towards them, not away.

* Company's product fills a critical need in the market. Backtrace is only two years old and the list of clients includes Nvidia, Comcast, and Fast.ly. Also two other huge tech companies I can't name without getting fired; their names start with letter A. * Startup with real revenues from real customers. * Technical challenges are hard. * There is a so much to learn and it is straightforward to take on more responsibilities. You can take on as much as you can handle.

* Work is demanding. Problems are hard, and we move fast. I have only worked for one other startup, and that one was more demanding, still... * Co-founders are not experienced managers and they are learning on the job. They got some people management stuff wrong early on but are paying a lot more attention to defining clear goals, performance management, and communications. I have seen a lot of improvement. * Not enough positive feedback from the top. Co-founders do talk about successes like winning Amazon's contract (huge!) but they often just want to jump to the next challenge. I do get that they want to satisfy the investors, but sometimes I think a keg party would be a nice touch :-).
