Pluspunten

I recently left BrightLocal after several years, and honestly, it’s one of the hardest goodbyes I’ve had professionally. What makes BrightLocal special isn’t just the flexibility, benefits, socials, trips, or opportunities (although those are genuinely fantastic), it’s the people and the culture. Over the years I worked with some of the funniest, kindest, smartest, and most supportive people I could’ve hoped to meet. It’s a company full of people who genuinely care about each other, celebrate wins together, and support each other through difficult moments too. One thing I appreciated most was the trust. You’re treated like an adult here. There’s real flexibility, autonomy, and encouragement to grow both professionally and personally. I was given opportunities and experiences I never expected to have, from international travel to leadership opportunities, charity work, major projects, and personal development that genuinely changed me as a person. I’ve also seen some reviews on here that paint a much more negative picture of the company and leadership. Everyone is entitled to their own experience and perspective, of course, but speaking personally, I genuinely did not experience the culture in that way at all. In my experience, BrightLocal was consistently supportive, people-focused, and full of individuals who cared deeply about both the company and each other. No workplace is perfect, especially during periods of growth and change, but I always felt listened to, trusted, and valued throughout my time here. The culture is something people can easily take for granted after a while, but after speaking to friends at other companies and now moving on myself, I realise just how rare somewhere like BrightLocal actually is. It’s a place where you can truly be yourself, where leadership cares about people, and where lifelong friendships are formed. I learned an enormous amount during my time here, but more importantly, I became a better, more confident person because of the people around me. No company is perfect, but BrightLocal gets far more right than almost anywhere else I’ve seen. I’ll genuinely miss this place and the people enormously, and I’ll always be incredibly grateful for my time here.

Minpunten

Like any growing company, priorities can occasionally shift quickly and busy periods do happen, but I always found teams supportive and collaborative during those moments.

Pluspunten

It’s hard to fully describe just how much I’m enjoying my time at BrightLocal. The culture they’ve created is genuinely fantastic: kind, caring, innovative, and exciting all at once. The projects I get to work on are some of the most challenging and rewarding of my career, with a clear and meaningful impact on the business. On top of that, I’m given real freedom and autonomy to try new things, grow, and develop professionally. It feels like the entire company is aligned around its long-term objectives, with everyone pulling in the same direction. And as if that wasn’t enough, the office culture is brilliant. Usually busy, full of great energy, and with plenty of social occasions that make it an even more enjoyable place to be.

Minpunten

Clearer career progression pathways would be fantastic but as a smaller company it's understandable that there might be limitations to what they can offer in this regard.

Nice office for Brighton Free food is ok We had good staff before a certain individual joined

Minpunten

The new Chief of Staff has ruined the company, she has made her way through each team and 'making redundant' any face that doesnt fit. We have lost countless amazing colleagues - why - because they didnt fit into the 'woke culture' being created.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. I am sorry to hear that your experience at BrightLocal didn’t meet your expectations and that you found our culture wasn’t the right fit for you. I would like to address the points you raised directly: Business Evolution and Team Changes: In all my time running BrightLocal (16 years), we have never been more focused and ambitious in what we want to achieve as a company. My leadership team and I - which includes our Chief of Staff and Culture - are continually focused on ensuring we have the right structure, roles, and people to achieve those ambitious goals. We are navigating a changing environment with the rapid advance of AI, increasing costs, and challenging international political situations. Sometimes this requires making tough decisions and changing the skills or experience we have in certain roles to ensure we are successful moving forward. These decisions are never made by one individual working in isolation, and they are never about a “face not fitting”. We believe that continuing to build an inclusive culture allows us to bring together a broad range of perspectives and experiences, which leads to better decision-making and a more resilient team. Team members leave BrightLocal for a range of reasons, as is the case in any rapidly growing business: career progression, role fit, personal circumstances, and changing expectations on both sides. It would be an oversimplification to attribute those departures to a single factor like “woke culture.” I know that not everyone will spend their whole career here, and it’s something for us to be proud of when people develop new skills, grow and move on to new and exciting opportunities outside of BrightLocal. Company Culture and Events: Our HQ is in the heart of Brighton, and we take great pride in being part of this diverse and vibrant community. We celebrate Brighton Pride because it is a cornerstone event for our city and many of our team members are proud members of both the LGBTQ community and the local community. As part of that, we have invited local drag queen performers to entertain the team and bring some fun and frivolity to the office. This only happens for one hour, once a year. I don’t believe it is “woke” to support and take pride in our local community. A Balanced Environment: We also celebrate many other events throughout the year, including Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Movember, and Black History Month. We decorate the office, provide food and treats, and organise lunch & learn sessions to raise awareness and educate—which aligns with our belief in being Endlessly Curious. Through these we raise money for a host of important charities and local causes, such as supporting rough sleepers in Brighton. These moments & contributions to our community are incredibly important. We ask our team to work hard and deliver a real impact; these events provide light relief and a chance to give back to the team and the community. For us, the journey we are on and how we support each other is just as important as the results we achieve. While I realise this environment may not suit everyone, it is central to how we choose to run BrightLocal. I genuinely wish you the best in finding a workplace that meets what you are looking for and proves fulfilling to you.
