Minpunten

You could never balance a real life and a work life. You'd be called even if you were scheduled off. The owner plays favorites; and will fire people on the drop of a dime if owner doesn't feel you are learning fast enough. Owner feels you should learn the games and know the entire store inside and out within 3 days or you don't belong working there. Owner has been known to pay certain employees under the table and not others. The games don't work all the time and owner knows this, and is okay with giving another game that does work as a payment instead of a refund. Owner rarely comes into certain locations, owner's idea is to open up many exit games and let them essentially run themselves. No direction, no leadership and the turn over rate is so high - literally; they have a list of over 40 employees who have been let go or used to work there. No one essentially really knows what they are doing. Its not a long term job, you wouldn't want to be there long term. Owner doesn't care about your opinion of the store and what could be better.

By far the worst job I have ever had. From the beginning the long list of past employees should have been a warning. They had a spreadsheet of probably more than 40 recently let go employees and I can see why. Let’s start with the training. The person in charge of training new employees was new therefore was and come off as nervous when training us. This person was an approachable individual but lacked the confidence and knowledge to train new employees. As it is we are stepping into unknown territory so are a bit nervous ourselves so the lack of confidence from a higher up does not help. The training was not helpful at all to the point where we where suggested to come and train outside of our expected work hours (without pay) to learn. Clearly your training isn’t great if you expect employees to come on their time off to do what you’re supposed to do which is properly train employees. As a result many of us messed up quite a bit more than we should have. For me personally I noticed conworkers got upset when I did not know how to do something such as using a program on the computer to set customers up to use the escape room when I had not even been trained to use it. After about three weeks of doing the job on the fly we where given an instruction book of sorts on how to properly set up the rooms. Why we where not given the sheet on the first day was beyond me. It was almost like we where purposely set up to fail. Perhaps this company loves to hire people just to let them go a few weeks after and have new faces. A personal con I had was scheduling. Of course the hours are unusual for a job but from the beginning in the interview I specifically said I would not be able to stay for the night shift. AFTER hiring me they put me only on night shift and was told if I couldn’t do it they would have to let me go. I stayed until two am at that place and struggled daily to get home. Mind you I had been assaulted recently so this was emotionally very stressful. I know this is not the company’s fault but why go through the hiring process only to inconvenience both yourself and your workers? Again is there a benefit to hiring people you most likely will let go? This is a genuine question. The owner of this establishment is a very nice and approachable guy. However, if he had an issue or concern with the way you did something rather than correct you he would call management so that management would confront you. What kind of leader is that? Why constantly demand leadership skills from your workers when you posses none of your own? The owner is very rarely at the Monterey Park location. When he was there he would praise the behavior he saw from certain employees when in fact they where not that way when he was around. Behind his back they would sneak away from the camaras to eat and just be lazy while us the new employees where expected to do just about everything. Yes it’s not a hard job but when you’re new, don’t know much, and are scolded for not knowing what you weren’t properly shown to begin with it gets depressing. When the owner was there you where followed around by an older employee to be criticized (fair enough) but in my experience the person who followed me just tore me apart for my “acting” skills rather than my customer service skills. I’m great with customers and the exit game seemed to value more acting skills which prior to this I had no acting experience what so ever but what eager to learn. With the month that I was given I was not able to properly exemplify that however towards the end I felt so torn apart that I did not care to be let go. A month after I was let go they had all new employees again. Working here could be so much better. Not only for the employees but for the customers. Customers are great I never had a bad experience. I’m great with people and loved to make their time here wonderful. You get people from all sorts of backgrounds and learn to interact with different personalities. I loved seeing them go home happy and excited to come back. Customers are what made me begin to care about the exit game as a whole. It made the other wise depressing work environment liveable. In fact I believe this was the reason this job emotionally drained me. I would come in excited to greet and escort new people into the rooms that I knew they would love and would go above and beyond to make their experience better only to be nit picked by conworkers who insisted on me bettering my acting skills. It was terribly hard to be happy for the customers there after. Over all if you are planning to apply, don’t. You won’t feel valued as an employee or even as a human being. You’re lucky if you work there for more than 3 months (I kid you not), and you’ll likely be there just about every holiday because this place never closes and then you’ll be tossed aside. There are really no benefits to working here other than the fact that they will get to add another employee to their long list of previous workers and you will get to put another seasonal job on your resume. This is why you see this job opening all the time.
