Federated is a fantastic propaganda machine! They pump the home office and support staff thinking that no other insurance provider is better. I left my initial training feeling like I won the lottery. I told my friends I work for the best company in the country. After a month in the field, I quickly learned that was not the case. Federated has good coverage and an excellent claims team. I would often joke with customers when I first sign them on that if they had a claim, they would be very happy with how it's handled. 95% of the time that was true. The problem with Federated is they write customers cheap and then quickly increase premium. You have little control over underwriting. Your underwriter controls your livelihood. If you have a good underwriter, your life is significantly easier. Most are too afraid of not hitting their increase goals from their managers that they don't move on accounts that shouldn't be getting an increase. Federated grows off of existing customers as more of a focus than external growth. It's easier and cheaper to renew an account high than write a new business. Another big problem I had with Federated is the huge disconnect in the layers of management. There are the guys (very much a good ole boys club from the mid-west) that sit in home office. They really only communicate with long standing reps that have achieved high success. Then there are multiple layers of middle management down to the actual foot soldiers. Most Federated district managers are promoted young with 2-3 successful years in the field. Federated has to do this because reps will eventually out earn the management position. If they paid their district managers more, they would get successful proven reps that have been in the trenches for 5-10 years and have a much better grasp of reality than the powers that be in home office. These new managers go out and hire people by telling them the average rep makes $200k. It's a very misleading statistic. Federated believes all territories are created equal. Nothing could be further from the truth. Every rep (550+ throughout the country) has the exact same quota. Think about that! A rep in rural West Virginia is required to sell the same amount of premium and life insurance as a rep on the outskirts of LA, Philly, or NYC. Is premium the same in CA as it is in MO or VA? It's insane! If you're looking to get your foot in the insurance industry door with hopes of moving on in a few years, this is an excellent opportunity. Federated will train you well. They tell you that you are more trained than other agents (remember that propaganda machine?) If you are looking to make this your final stop until retirement, enjoy the grind. Don't let Federated hiring managers fool you. Federated Insurance is a life insurance company that offers a property and casualty product. You are graded and judged on selling life insurance.
