Pluspunten

People are understanding, and respect a work-life balance while still being driven to get the job done. Most people really care about doing their job well. Rewarded for hard work even for lower level salaried staff. Has a small company feel while playing with the "big boys". Management is receptive to input from all levels, and cares about employees. Younger staff can quickly gain significant responsibility, allowing growth not possible at other companies. Staff at all levels seem to enjoy working together, and often joke with each other. Relaxed atmosphere and open door policy. Benefits - health insurance is reasonable.

Minpunten

Company lacks the traditional leader with the powerful personality, but this may be by design. As with many companies, there is a culture gap between generations. Lack of transparency and conversational communication from management for a company that professes to want an ownership culture. No publicly defined bonus or salary structure, even for management. The lack of transparency can create resentment that wouldn't occur under a public structure.

Pluspunten

Decent pay and benefits as an employee-owned company. Work is interesting and varied. There is little micro-management and the dress is business casual when not in the field. You get to try lots of different job tasks in many different parts of Oregon and Washington. There are lot of committees that you can get on to voice your opinion, from technology to sustainability. There numerous people I have met over the years who started off in the environmental or geotechnical profession with Hart Crowser.

Minpunten

Senior management is made up primarily of geotechnical engineers, and the environmental section has relied too strongly on state contracts and only a couple large clients, making environmental work feast-or-famine. There is a serious disconnect between the Seattle headquarters and satellite offices, despite years of attempting to bridge that gap. Continuing education and training is weak to non-existent. The Portland office has very weak leadership and, in my opinion, will continue to increase unit losses as they don't have a strong business development group.
