One huge misstep was the Bain investment and the desire to grow way too fast. In doing so, SevOne became uber-corporate, and while the "culture of awesome" remained among the mid-level managers and individual contributors who were making the company's gears actually turn, the senior execs tucked themselves away in their new Boston HQ and fell victim to the temptation of the almighty dollar and corporate America.
