Location flexibility is very limited and often feels inconsistent. Decisions about who is allowed to work in certain offices appear opaque, and employees who express preferences sometimes feel those preferences work against them rather than being considered. There are also concerning cultural issues. In my experience, there was a noticeable gender imbalance in how careers progressed. Maternity leave was often perceived as time away rather than a normal part of working life, which meant women with children could find themselves behind peers who had simply worked more continuous hours. Some colleagues returning from maternity leave felt sidelined or moved out of their previous roles. Leadership often seemed disconnected from the day-to-day reality for employees. Independent thinking wasn’t always encouraged, and the culture could feel top-down rather than collaborative. Because of this, people were often reluctant to raise concerns openly, which led to a lack of honest feedback and psychological safety within teams. When I left the company after several years, I asked for an exit interview because I wanted to provide constructive feedback that might improve the experience for others who cannot easily leave. Unfortunately, it felt like there was little interest in hearing it. I have since moved to a much healthier work environment and am grateful for the change.

Thanks for taking the time to share this, especially given your tenure, that perspective matters. On the gender point you raised, I think it’s important to address that directly. At an overall level, our organisation, including People Leaders and senior leadership, is pretty balanced, sitting close to a 50:50 split globally. That doesn’t mean every team or discipline looks the same, but on balance we’re in a strong place relative to the market. Representation is one part of the picture, but how people experience things like maternity leave, returning to work, and progression also matters. Our focus is on ensuring those experiences are consistent and fair across the organisation. You’ve also called out leadership visibility, psychological safety, and the ability to speak up. As we’ve scaled, maintaining that consistently across teams becomes more complex, and it’s an area we’re actively working to strengthen. On the exit experience, we do have mechanisms in place to capture feedback, and that input is used to inform how we evolve as a company. I'm sorry that experience wasn't a positive one for you, but we do take note of the feedback in these processes. There’s a lot we’re continuing to evolve as a business, we're not a scale up anymore and so we need to balance employee experience with business requirements and consistent, global processes. We won’t get everything right, but the focus is on building a more consistent, transparent, and scalable organisation. Appreciate you taking the time to share this.
