We have great news from Fresta Valley Robotics Club (Team 1731) following the First Chesapeake District Robotics Competition last the weekend: the team placed first with their sturdy and programmable and memorable robot, Low Rider! 🏆 The two-day competition took place at Meridian High School in Falls Church, VA. According to one of the team mentors, Timothy Waltz, Vice President, Sensors and Systems at Riverside Research, Team 1731 made some improvements to their robot following the last competition, including mechanical reliability enhancements, software improvements, and autonomous function. (The robot must perform the first 15 seconds of the competition without human intervention.) The team also picked up its second Autonomous Award for this feature. 🤖 Pictured: the team with the champion banner and David Samy, the student who programmed the robot’s autonomous routine. On March 5, Riverside Research hosted a career event at the East Asian Studies Center with the Center for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies at The Ohio State University. The students and faculty appreciated the Riverside Research team (Michelle McKenzie, Eric Connelly, and Joe Abiog) presenting to the class about career opportunities for linguists. Graduate and undergraduate students in STEM and humanities fields came out to learn, including students studying Chinese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, and Latin. We are excited to announce the publication of “Multi-material printing from one solution by varying laser parameters,” written by Jordan Adams, Optical Scientist at Riverside Research, and co-authored by Daniel Young of Wright State University. Adams and Young describe how laser scan rate can control the elemental ratio of two metals in the deposited structure. In our next From The Lab To The Field video series, Dr. Eli Lansey, Research Scientist, delivers an overview of Riverside Research’s Computational Electromagnetics work. “We’re developing new methods for solving really challenging electromagnetics problems, such as large radar cross section scattering problems or antenna design cases where you might have very large problems or finely detailed geometries for antennas and we want to be able to develop new methods that can solve those problems in ways that current tools are unable to,” Lansey explains, then describing how the team also uses simulations to produce favorable results.
