It’s been a couple of years since I worked as a sales associate at Nike Utrecht and to this day I still can’t believe how toxic that place was. The level of pressure, control, and mental exhaustion was absolutely insane. For eight hours straight you are forced to wear a headset and the floor managers never stop bothering you, constantly pushing you to approach customers even when it’s clear they don’t want to be disturbed. If a customer actually does need help, they still find a way to complain that you didn’t approach fast enough. They nitpick every single thing. Where you stand, how you stand, even if your hands are behind your back. You are not allowed to lean, not allowed to sit, not even for a few seconds, even when the store is completely empty or closed. Imagine your back hurting, your feet burning, and you can’t even put your hands behind your back for a moment of relief because it “doesn’t look professional.” It’s pure madness. The managers act like they own you. There is no respect, no empathy, no sense of basic humanity. You are treated like a replaceable machine whose only purpose is to push products and hit sales targets. The whole store runs on stress, pressure, and fake smiles. And all of that for a minimum wage salary on a zero hour contract. They don’t even pay you for your first month because they hold that salary until the day you leave. Salaries are often late. The HR system is a complete joke, outdated and frustrating to use. Reporting transportation or meal costs is nearly useless because you rarely get reimbursed. The Utrecht store even forces employees to go work in Amsterdam whenever they feel like it, claiming there’s a staff shortage. It is completely against the rules, but they do not care. They say they will pay your train ticket as if that makes it okay to drag you to another city. The clock in and clock out system barely works. It breaks all the time and when managers enter your hours manually, they often make mistakes, usually in their favor. Keeping track of your hours is a nightmare. When it’s about the store’s targets, they communicate perfectly, but when it’s about your pay or schedule, they disappear. The only time management smiles at you is when you hit your daily sales target. The rest of the time you are invisible. Sometimes you cannot even log your sales because there are not enough working phones in the store, yet they still blame you for missing targets. Nike Utrecht was not a workplace, it was a mental prison disguised as a store. You give them your time, your energy, your health, and they give you nothing but stress, pressure, and disrespect. It’s a place where burnout is normal and humanity is completely forgotten, all for the sake of hitting one more sales number.
